The Humanities faculty at The Ridgeway School is an integral part of a highly
successful school. We offer an exciting, demanding and highly rewarding
environment in which to work. We are a professional, hard working team but also
pride ourselves on being friendly and supportive
The Humanities faculty at The Ridgeway is made up of a combination of the
Geography, History, Religious Studies and Government/Politics departments. As
well as a Head of Faculty there are also subject leaders for each department.
The faculty is a good mix of experienced and more recently qualified staff who
work effectively together.
At KS3, Geography, History and Religious Studies are taught in three Banded
groups (A,B and C) with students having two to three hours of each subject
across the two week timetable. All subjects offer well planned courses following
the National Curriculum guidelines. Although as a faculty we recognize the
importance of maintaining the integrity of our separate subjects we work very
closely together in a number of areas including assessment, curriculum content
and extra curricular activities.
At KS4 Geography, History and Religious Studies are offered at GCSE level. Every
year well over half of The Ridgeway students opt to follow one of our GCSE
courses.
At KS5 Geography, History, RS (Philosophy & Ethics) and Government /Politics are
offered at both AS and A2 level.
Our students have enjoyed great examination success at both GCSE and A level with
results being regularly among the best in the school. Our subjects are taught in
specialist teaching rooms. We are very well equipped in terms of texts, teaching
resources and specialist equipment. ICT is integrated into teaching wherever
possible. The use of ICT in teaching and learning is greatly enhanced by the use
of interactive whiteboards & ICT projectors in all rooms.
We are increasingly aiming to offer joint enrichment activities reflecting the
close relationship between the different subjects. The faculty is also keen to
make a significant contribution to wider school life. For instance in the
faculty runs a ‘Holocaust Day’ for all year 9 students which aims to show the
value of our subjects in helping students to understand issues relating to
prejudice, rights and responsibility.
