PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) focuses on personal well being and economic wellbeing and financial capability. At The Ridgeway School National Curriculum Citizenship also forms part of this programme. It is taught as discrete timetabled subject.
These interrelated programmes of study make a significant contribution to pupils’ personal development and draw together in a coherent way, personal ,social and health education, including sex and relationship education (SRE), the emotional aspects of learning, Careers education and guidance(CEG), enterprise, financial capability and work related learning.
The programmes of study for Key Stages 3 and 4 are not statutory but they include some statutory requirements eg SRE, CEG. There are no national curriculum levels for PSHE.
PSHE and C are designed to be flexible so that the subjects can be made relevant to students. They provide an opportunity to address real life and topical issues and show pupils how they can bring about change.
The Ridgeway School is committed to embracing healthy lifestyles. The school has played an active role in developing and achieving National Healthy School status.
Citizenship
Is a statutory subject at KS3 and KS4.National Curriculum levels for Citizenship will be introduced from 2008.
Citizenship encourages pupils to take an interest in topical and controversial issues and to engage in discussion and debate. Pupils learn about their rights and responsibilities, justice and democracy. There is a strong emphasis within the school on active and global citizenship.
Citizenship encourages young people to challenge injustice, inequalities and discrimination. The key processes and skills essential to progress in Citizenship are:
- Critical thinking and enquiry
- Advocacy and representation
- Taking informed and responsible action
An annual whole school Citizenship is staged each March. Teams are encouraged to deliver aspects of Citizenship within their specialist areas. A programme for the week is published and matched to the Citizenship programmes of study. Use of outside speakers is also made during this week to engage pupils with Citizenship issues. The Team also use Citizenship Week as an opportunity to plan transition activities for Y6 and Y5 pupils eg Fairtrade workshops.
Pupils have the option to sit GCSE Citizenship Studies during Y10. These sessions take place during the enrichment sessions. There is a high success rate with the subject.
Year 10 Work Experience
All Y10 pupils have the opportunity to undertake a week’s placement during Y10. Preparation, debriefing and evaluation of the programme is delivered through the Y10 PSHE and C lessons. Pupils can set up their own placements or select a placement from the school data base. Health and Safety checks on placements are undertaken by Trident.
