Duke of Edinburgh - Kit Guidance
Going on a D. of E. expedition is a serious activity, especially the Qualifying trips, which will all involve participants walking independently of their leaders and navigating a route in rugged or wild countryside. The weather is unpredictable in this country and unless the participant is suitably equipped any resulting discomfort could in poor conditions lead to danger for the whole group. If even one person is not suitably equipped they may have a problem which could stop the other members of the team from completing the expedition, or worse, having to deal with a person who has fallen ill or had an accident. It is vital therefore, that each member of the party is suitably equipped for the journey, with the expectation of poor weather and rugged terrain.
The D of E team have reviewed and updated the kit list issued to Award participants and hope that the information given here will help parents to equip their child properly but at minimum cost. The kit list is designed to ensure safety and comfort during outdoor expeditions, but not everything has to be obtained by every participant. Some can be shared amongst walking groups.
The school carries a stock of kit that can be hired but more personal items will need to be bought or borrowed. To see what is available

The
kit checklist
is very much safety related and your child cannot be allowed to go on an expedition without all these items. These items are to ensure acceptable levels of comfort given the variability of our weather and countryside conditions.

The best investments for a limited budget are boots and the jacket, followed probably by a sleeping bag. Quality becomes less critical in other items. Below are some of the local suppliers which we have visited and which you may find useful. Some offer discount to participants in the Award Scheme on production of your record book or the card in your record book pack. Often however, they may well give you the discount simply by asking for it! If you want impartial advice, chat to The D Of E team. Below lists some local suppliers.
