German
German is taught in Year 7 to all classes in alternate years. The year 7 cohort next year will all start with German. They will have five lessons a fortnight and gain a sound basic understanding of how to learn a language before picking up French as a second language in year 8. A small group of pupils who are better suited to learning just one language prepare the FCSE French qualification offered by the AQA examining board in years 8 and 9 and receive a nationally recognised certificate for this at the end of year 9. The top 2 classes in Band A are offered the opportunity to do both French and German from the outset – 3 lessons a fortnight in German and 2 a fortnight in French if the predominant language for the year group is German.
Pupils are encouraged to continue with a language in KS4 and can choose to learn one or both languages.
Languages remain a popular choice in KS4 as their usefulness in later life is recognised by the pupils.
