The Ridgeway School is very proud of the students that it helps to shape into unique, considerate, amazing young people. The positive relationships developed with teachers and the wide range of visits, trips and experiences that are offered within and beyond the taught curriculum at Ridgeway help prepare our students for their future.
Curriculum Intent
The staff at The Ridgeway School (TRS) work hard to ensure all students receive the following;
The Curriculum at TRS inspires learners for their future through its breadth and depth providing students with the knowledge, skills and experiences to make sense of the changing world, make informed choices and develop the confidence to be successful in their desired destinations.
Students at TRS are known and valued as unique individuals, each with their own personality, aspirations and needs. Strong, positive relationships enable staff to understand their students and support them to achieve.
Learning at TRS extends beyond the classroom. The use of real world examples and first hand experiences develop curiosity and a desire to extend their understanding and deepen learning. Built on a coherent plan for the acquisition of knowledge, understanding is evidenced through the development of skills in applying knowledge to new context and mastery demonstrated through challenge, questioning and problem solving.
Assessment at TRS provides frequent opportunities for formative feedback to ensure teaching is responsive to student need and progress is referenced against individual targets in each subject. Students are equipped with the skills, resilience, habits and independence to achieve their best.
Progress at TRS is founded on developing the core literacy and numeracy of every student, enabling them to access the curriculum. All students receive support to build cultural capital, read fluently and with their comprehension and application of key vocabulary.
Life at TRS is built on respect, trust and choice. Students are empowered to take responsibility and make informed decision-making as an integral part of their school and wider community.
Through the intent outlined in the statements above, the curriculum at The Ridgeway School aims to prepare its students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in their future lives and careers. The importance of informed personal choice and the self-confidence and values on which positive decisions are based are important aspects of the curriculum delivered at The Ridgeway School and inform the vision underpinning the intent, as well as the philosophy of the school in working towards the uptake targets/aspirations set by Government.
Implementation
The Ridgeway School & Sixth Form College aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all students so that they can fully develop their talents. We place a strong emphasis on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. At the same time we recognise that every child should be given the opportunity to explore their interest in the arts, humanities, languages and sport.
Knowledge based curriculum
What a student knows informs what they learn next. The curriculum at The Ridgeway School is built on ensuring that students have the knowledge to make sense of their learning. The acquisition of knowledge is organised and taught to students in a considered structure and sequence to ensure all learners have the ‘facts’ on which to build and subsequently link their understanding.
The model below represents the structure for how the curriculum builds on a secure base of knowledge in developing a deeper understanding and subsequent application to new contexts and in solving more complex problems.
