Year 8 – Inter School Reading Event – Gr8 Book Debate 2016
The Ridgeway School has once again collaborated with two other schools in Swindon, Isambard Community School and Nova Hreod Academy, inviting students in Year 8 to participate in a reading review event. The Gr8 Book Debate invites 10 students, from 3 schools, to review 5 books, and takes place as part of our continued support and development of our students and is now in its fifth year.
The event will launch took place on Thursday 3 March at Isambard Community School where the students were introduced to their fellow participants and had a chance to look at the selected texts. Students then read each book in preparation to discuss, debate and present their views at a finale event on Wednesday 6 July.
The books selected for discussion are as follows:
- Terror Kid by Benjamin Zephaniah
- Cowgirl by G R Gemin
- Shine by Candy Gourlay
- The Bubble Wrap Boy by Phil Earle
- Smart by Kim Slater
The Gr8 Book Debate came to a nail-biting conclusion this term, with Shine by Candy Gourlay being declared the winner. After several months of training which had obviously included reading the books as well as attending 3B (Books, and biscuits at break), opinions were put forward, arguments heard, and questions posed, as we welcomed students from Isambard and Nova to join us for the debate. A massive thankyou to Booktrust for providing the books, and to Chloe Clark, their School Programme Coordinator who joined us for the event. If you would like to take a look at the YouTube video Candy sent our students please click here. It was shown to the students after the secret ballot to avoid influencing the vote!
