What a whirlwind! From being told we would have to set up mass testing a day before the Christmas Break, to testing all students in school from January and then test all students three times by the end of Thursday this week.

The Ridgeway test centre and its team have made the impossible possible. A team cobbled together to embark on a logistical nightmare of a journey in the name of keeping our students safe. We arrived as strangers and have certainly left as family. Having reached the end it is safe to say we achieved what was set out to do!

The plan worked and since the start of January we have completed over 6500 tests; allowing us to prevent the spread of the virus and help keep our community safe. The school would like to thank its existing staff for dropping their current roles and to our team of volunteers who gave up their time. All those involved were a credit to the school and the surrounding community. As we move into home testing I also want to thank the students for their maturity and commitment to keeping the school COVID secure. Long may it continue. The journey we have been on should be an example to all of our students, nothing is impossible. The longest of journeys always start with a single step.

On Wednesday 3rd March the MFL team hosted a virtual languages day for year five students. Over 200 children from schools across Swindon joined us online as we went on the hunt for an evil supervillain and trekked across the world, learning about languages and cultures as we went. Students had taster sessions in five different languages (French, German, Spanish, Swedish and Russian) and had to collect clues to solve an international mystery as they went. We also ran a creative competition and the standard of entries has been phenomenal, with traditional music and dances, baking and monuments from different cultures all being submitted. Winners will be announced next week and will receive a £10 Amazon voucher.

We are already looking forward to running next year’s event, hopefully in person!
