Over the past few weeks, many of our Year 9 artists and staff have been contributing towards a ‘Thank You Key Workers’ Art sculpture in the main hall. Students and staff were tasked with writing a personalised message to a key worker that they know, and to turn this message into an origami bird. Some 300 individual messages were written.

It was huge honour to welcome the Deputy Chief Nurse Tania Currie and the Infection Control Lead for COVID-19 Lisa Hocking from the GWH on Tuesday 8th December, to unveil the sculpture. We asked three year 9 students, David, Georgina and JC, to read a selection of messages to Tania and Lisa. It was fantastic to see the conversations between them and the students in regards to careers and futures. A huge well done to these students, who all received house points for their contributions towards the sculpture.

I’m sure the message of the sculpture reflects the thoughts of all our students and staff who have so much gratitude and respect for the NHS, particular during such a strange and eventful year. With the mass vaccination process now starting, we can all see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

I must extend my gratitude to Tim Goscomb and his site team, who created the frame and assisted with the hanging of the sculpture. The amazing Art staff who helped in threading the origami birds, as well as both Assistant Principal Tom Pittaway, and the Principal James Povoas, for the logistics. Without your help this wouldn’t have been possible. Mr Millard

Pandemic safety measures present additional trials for Silver Block’s students with autism. During much-needed down time they have been decorating the Silver Block year group bubbles for Christmas. Creative tasks include Advent Calendars, Sock puppets, Hama beads, bunting and a forest of magazine Christmas trees. Josh Noel has chosen to make Santa’s sleigh out of cardboard boxes which is a work in progress! We’re absolutely certain he’ll have it flying by Christmas (so long as we can find a suitably magical team of reindeer). But as we’ve discovered many times in Silver Block; the impossible just takes a little longer!

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas from all of us in Silver Block.
