The ASC SRP Paints with Cars
Immersion days are difficult for most autistic students; the timetable is gone, replaced by a day of linked activities with different staff, often in unfamiliar rooms. The ASC SRP students are encouraged to engage to the limit of their resilience, but most need some ‘down time’, the effect of which is enhanced when the session includes an activity they can engage with in a fun way.
For the January immersion day, Silver Block brought in a professional artist who paints by driving remote control cars through blobs and squirts of paint on large canvases (he achieved prominence when Silverstone F1 invited him to create giant portraits of Lewis Hamilton, followed by commissions from Nissan Leaf and other car makers). There is always an ulterior motive in these fun sessions.
After an impressive biographical presentation our students were keen to have a go. Those who have difficulty with mess had the opportunity to help create giant colour wheels from the primary colours squirted onto the canvases, gradually becoming more involved as the enthusiasm as the mess-lovers affected their mood too. We noted with interest the students who couldn’t bear to join in with what they considered to be the abuse of the remote control cars used – the same students who cannot bear to annotate a printed book, giving staff valuable additional insights.
The second activity was to create a portrait of the person opposite, using smaller, passive toy cars and motorbikes as brushes. The results were very interesting and surprisingly recognisable! Another ‘plus’ from these activities was the level to which the students interacted, enjoying each other’s company in a colourful, messy, engaging environment.
Year 8 Immersion Day
On 21st January our Year 8s enjoyed a day learning about the culture and languages of other countries. They ate and critiqued cakes from all around the world and even planned a multi-cultural wedding.
All students also spent two hours scripting and rehearsing a short play set in a French, German or Spanish café. The best performances will go forward to a competition in March to be held at the Wyvern Theatre where Ridgeway students will compete against Year 8s from other Swindon schools, but will work with professional theatre staff on their costumes, lighting and make up.
